✚ A Brief History

Launched in 2018, the Orient Triton was an immediate success, although at that time it was not named after the Greek god of the sea.
Orient Triton

Its name was limited to the manufacturer’s initials: RA-EL0001B (black version), RA-EL0002L (blue version), and RA-EL0003B (black and gold version).

However, fans of the brand started calling it Triton, a nickname that suits the watch well given its characteristics.

By 2019, Triton was widely known by its nickname, and the brand decided to take action by changing its name to Neptune, another sea god.

Consequently, both the official brand websites and retailers changed the name in their catalogs, but people were already accustomed to the nickname.

In fact, fans of the brand still mostly refer to it as the Orient Triton, so from now on, we will refer to it in those terms.

✚ Design and Features

The Triton was launched as a successor to the Orient M Force, and essentially, it is a more moderate version of the same watch with a less aggressive design but similar features.

This makes it easier to wear and match with different outfits, while still being a true dive watch with the required resistance and durability.

To have a clearer view of the new design and its distinguishing features, let’s analyze each part separately.

➤ Case

With a diameter of 43.6 mm and a thickness of 13.6 mm, one could say that the Triton’s case is of a good size, but the truth is that its design makes it appear and feel smaller than it actually is.
Orient Triton case

This is mainly achieved thanks to the position of the crown, located at 4 o’clock to avoid interfering with wrist movement.

This is a feature commonly seen in Seiko watches, which is part of the same conglomerate as Orient, as well as other brands that pay homage to it, such as Steeldive.

The case is made of solid stainless steel and has a screw-down case back to ensure complete water resistance.

Like most serious divers, the case back is solid, which increases its resistance. It may not be particularly eye-catching, but we are talking about a watch designed for tough underwater tasks.

➤ Bezel and Crown

The bezel of the Orient Triton is a 120-click unidirectional rotating bezel made of aluminum, featuring a coin-edge for better grip.

It also has the classic lumed insert or lume pip at 12 o’clock, which allows it to be used in low visibility conditions.

The crown, besides being located at 4 o’clock, is screw-down to the case to prevent water from entering the watch’s interior.

As is customary in this type of design, the crown is partially integrated into the case and protected on both sides.

The colored mark surrounding the crown is particularly noteworthy, as it allows for a clear indication of whether it is screwed in or unscrewed.

This is especially useful as it helps prevent accidentally entering the water with the crown unscrewed, which could be catastrophic for the watch.

On the outer end of the crown, you can find the Orient logo engraved, a common aesthetic detail in the brand’s watches.

➤ Certifications

On the back of the Triton, you can read the inscription “Air Diver’s 200m,” indicating that it is certified for scuba diving with an oxygen tank.

Although, unlike the M-Force, the Orient Triton does not have ISO 6425 certification, it does comply with the JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) for a Class 1 dive watch.

JIS is the Japanese national certification organization, equivalent to ISO certification in Japan, and their tests are even more rigorous.

For example, watches with this certification not only need to have greater water resistance but also pass other tests, such as resistance to impacts, magnetism, and temperature changes.

➤ Dial and Crystal

As a proper dive watch, the dial of the Orient Triton offers a high degree of visibility thanks to its large hour markers and contrast with the background.
Orient Triton crystal

The hands are thick and have the classic arrow style. They are also generously coated with luminescent material, making them stand out.

In fact, all the markers are filled with lume, and due to their large size, they appear very bright in the dark, allowing you to read the watch in any situation.

The date is positioned at 4 o’clock, possibly to better organize the dial in relation to the power reserve indicator, another notable feature of the Triton.

Although some criticize this indicator for disrupting the harmony of the dial, it is actually a very useful complication as it indicates the watch’s power level.

All of this is protected by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, a quality not commonly found in dive watches.

Therefore, besides being practically scratch-resistant, it offers excellent visibility from any viewing angle.

➤ Bracelet

All Orient Triton watches come with a stainless steel bracelet that matches the rest of the watch. The bracelet features a dive extension and a double security clasp.

Its width is 22 mm, which is a fairly standard size, making it easy to find a replacement bracelet, such as a rubber strap, if desired.

The clasp also has multiple micro-adjustment holes for a more precise fit and is signed with the Orient logo.

➤ Movement

The heart that powers this watch is the Orient 40N5A, a highly reliable and well-known automatic movement used in many Orient watches.
For example, it is also present in some M-Force models and other more expensive dive watch models.

One of the advantages of Orient is that they manufacture their own movements, allowing for a high degree of customization with complications not commonly seen in other brands.

The power reserve indicator in the 40N5A is a good example of this, as it is a relatively rare complication in watches at this price level.

In terms of specifications, it is a 22-jewel caliber operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour (vph) and capable of storing approximately 40 hours of power reserve.

It also features the functions of hacking (stop seconds) and manual winding, both highly valued by watch enthusiasts.

The hacking function allows for more precise time setting by stopping the seconds hand completely, while the manual winding function allows the watch to be wound by rotating the crown, without the need to move the watch itself.

Regarding precision, Orient specifies this movement within a range of +25 to -15 seconds per day, which in practice is often much more accurate.

The ranges established by the brands should be understood as a classification, indicating the maximum acceptable deviation values for each mechanism.

In fact, most users of this watch report precisions below +5 seconds per day, which is quite common in quality movements like the 40N5A.

Another advantage of these calibers is that they can be easily adjusted, so if you’re not satisfied with the accuracy of your watch, it can be improved with proper adjustment.

✚ Available Models of Orient Triton

Basically, there are three different versions of the Triton, identified by the manufacturer’s codes: EL0002L00A, EL0001B00A, and EL0003B00A.

All three versions have the exact same size and specifications internally, so the differences are purely aesthetic.

These differences include variations in dial color, bezel color, and the color of hands and markers. Let’s see exactly what they are:

➤ Blue Triton – EL0002L00A

blue Orient Triton

Possibly the most popular among all the combinations. It features a blue dial and bezel, while the markers and hands have a silver outline.

In fact, this shade of blue is widely used by the brand, to the extent that some critics refer to it as “Orient blue.”

➤ Black Triton – EL0001B00A

black Orient Triton

Due to its understated color combination, the black model is possibly the most classic, versatile, and elegant option.

The matte finish of the dial is far from boring and it goes well with any attire, whether it’s formal wear or a wetsuit.

➤ Black and Gold Triton – EL0003B00A

Another option is to add some gold accents to the watch for a more eye-catching appearance, which is done beautifully by the EL0003B00A model in black and gold.

In this case, the dial features just the right amount of gold accents to outline the hands and markers, as well as a gold border around the bezel.

The dial remains elegantly matte black, so it is not an excessively flashy design.

✚ Price and Reviews

One of the strong points of Orient is that it offers great value and reasonable prices for each of its watches, and the Triton is no exception.

While it is not one of the most affordable divers, there are often deals where it can be obtained for much less than the recommended retail price.

This raises questions about the different distributors and the margin at which these watches are sold. Fortunately, there are many online alternatives to search for and compare prices.

There is no doubt that the Orient Triton is a great watch, both in terms of its design and functionality, including its complications.

However, it’s worth considering that at its normal retail price, you can also find some Swiss watches, such as certain models from Certina.

Nevertheless, with a good discount, which is often offered by the brand, the Triton has no competition and is always a great choice.
